McLaren agree Montoya release

12 July, 2006

Colombian driver Juan Pablo Montoya has been released by McLaren just days after announcing his plans to move into NASCAR racing.

Spaniard Pedro de la Rosa will partner Kimi Raikkonen at this weekends French Grand Prix

Mclaren boss Ron Dennis said, "Juan Pablo is an exciting driver and immensely likeable character who will undoubtedly make a successful transition to the NASCAR scene,"

"We have agreed that with so many things happening in Juan Pablo's life right now, he should take some time out of the car and prepare professionally and personally for the future."

Montoya said he was excited about his move into NASCAR racing for the Chip Ganassi racing team and was grateful to have his future settled.

"I have enjoyed most of my time in Formula 1 and I'm grateful for this opportunity to settle my personal life and concentrate on my future career."

Montoya was to be replaced by reigning Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso at McLaren next season.
