Surging Yankees Slumping Red Sox
04 August, 2006
The New York Yankees are back in first place for the first time since June after a 5-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Yankees posted their sixth win in seven games to draw one game clear of the Boston Red Sox in the race for the AL East title after the BoSox fell 6-3 to the Cleveland Indians at Fenway Park.
The Red Sox lost catcher Jason Varitek, who went on the disabled list and will have arthroscopic surgery on his injured left knee.
The Yankees had their share of good fortune in this one with new signing Bobby Abreu on the right side of some questionable calls that saw the Yankees load the bases in the fourth inning.
Bernie Williams was on hand to clean up for the Yankees, handing the Blue Jays their fifth loss in six outings when he hit a three run double.
