Race Day Info

The running of the W.S. Cox Plate takes place at the Moonee Valley Racecourse, located approximately 6km's from Melbourne's CBD. The racecourse is situated in the inner north suburb of Moonee Ponds, surrounded by neighbouring suburbs of Ascot Vale, Essendon and Brunswick.

The track spans 2040 metres and is within close proximity to the Flemington racecourse, home of the Melbourne Cup carnival.

It's important to plan your method of transport to the Cox Plate, as this event is one of the most popular social outings in the Spring Racing Carnival. See below the transport options for the Cox Plate.

Types of transport:

By Train - Frequent trains run to and from the Moonee Ponds train station with a short 10 min stroll down Puckle Street to the Moonee Valley Racecourse. Simply jump on the Craigieburn or Broadmeadows train lines from Melbourne's Southern Cross, Flinder's Street or North Melbourne train stations. By Tram - Catch Tram no: 59 from the corner of Elizabeth and Flinders' Streets (exit Flinders Street train station, Flinders street end). The tram will drop you off on Mt Alexander Road at the Puckle Street junction. From here it's a one minute walk (200m) to the racecourse.

By Taxi - To ensure you arrive on time, it is highly recommended to book a TAXI in advance. You can also try your luck outside the Southern Cross Train Station's Taxi Rank on Spencer Street or the Flinder's Street Station (opposite Federation Square) on St Kilda Rd. For your return leg, there's also a TAXI rank located in Coates Street, Moonee Ponds.

By Car - The Moonee Valley Racecourse is situated next to the CityLink Freeway. Take the Mooreland Road exit from the Freeway and travel along Pascoe Vale Road/Ascot Vale Road.
