Caulfield Cup
Regarded as one ofthe toughest, richest and best 2400m thoroughbred handicaps in Australia, the Caulfield Cup was first run in the autumn of 1879 and wonby Newminster.
In 1881 it was switched to the spring,so that there were two winners that year - Blue Ribbon in the autumn and MasterAvenel in the spring. It was not the only occasion that there were two CaulfieldCup winners in the same year. This occurred again in 1943 when therace was run in two divisions to accommodate the massive number of entries.
The Caulfield Cup is a race which hasbeen won by some of the best horses in Australia and has long been the first“leg” of Australia’s most popular betting double, linking in with the Melbourne Cup. Such horsesto achieve this remarkable feat include the 2009 Caulfield Cup winner Viewed,who took out the Melbourne Cup in 2008. In total there have been eleven horseswho have achieved the 'Cups Double'.
In 2011 Southern Speed won theCaulfield Cup to give jockey Craig Williams and trainers Leon Macdonald andAndrew Gluyas their first win by beating Green Moon to the winning post.
